Kelly Link writes, “When I was very little, I was obsessed with the big bad wolf. I didn’t care that much for the three little pigs. I liked the huffing and puffing. In kindergarten I was Little Red Riding Hood in the class play, and the next year I was the troll under the bridge in The Three Billy Goats Gruff. I got to wear a white beard made out of white cotton balls.

“When I was old enough to read to myself, I loved The Tinderbox, where the soldier meets the three dogs whose eyes are as big as saucers, as dinner plates, as spinning wheels. I also loved The Goose Girl, although I was never satisfied with the ending. Before the princess becomes a goose girl, she has a talking horse. Afterward, she has a prince, but no horse. I did not feel that a prince was anywhere near as good as a talking horse. I still don’t. Now I love the Russian fairy tales, where the witch Baba Yaga lives in a house that walks around on chicken legs. Now that’s as good as a talking horse.

“I wanted to retell the story of the girl who makes shirts out of nettles for her brothers, who have been turned into swans by their wicked stepmother. I thought that in my version, the girl might want to be a swan as well. I would. But Emma Bear is much more practical than I am. She’s also much better at sewing.”

Link lives outside Boston, Massachusetts.
